Global Review
Traditionally, most aircraft hijackings have been perpetrated with the aim of using passengers as hostages; the objective is normally to obtain either political asylum / defection for the perpetrator, or to gain the release of terrorists being held in prison.
Since the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, when the use of hijacked aircraft as suicide missiles changed the global perception of hijacking as a security threat, securing the aviation industry has been a major area of focus for security experts. Other more recent incidents have reinforced the need for countries and governments to reassess their aviation vulnerabilities and as a consequence most have subsequently implemented measures that have improved their levels of aviation security.
Threat
However, in spite of the improved security measures taken, the threat of terrorism to civil aviation remains high. In addition to the traditional threats of hijacking & sabotage, a relatively new tactic has evolved and been enhanced: the attacking of planes with shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles.
Overview
The attacks of September 11, 2001 exposed the vulnerabilities of the aviation industry and since then significant investment has been made and efforts undertaken on a wide range of initiatives. The specific aim has been to enhance the security of commercial aviation. Despite this however, vulnerabilities in aviation security remain a very real and present danger.
